ASEAN University Network/ Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net) was established in 2001 with its vision to contribute to sustainable social and economic development through highly skilled human resource development in engineering field. The network and its program activities are supported by ASEAN Governments and the Government of Japan through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Full operation of AUN/SEED-Net Projects started in 2003 with main support from the JICA, Member Institutions and Member Governments. The network of AUN/SEED-Net is composed of 26 Member Institutions from 10 ASEAN countries selected from leading institutions in engineering in respective countries.
In the face of Phase 3, UTM have become AUN/SEED-Net Member Institution. As of 2015, the network consists of 40 Member Institutions across 10 ASEAN countries and Japan.

Program & Activity:
Graduate Degree Program
AUN/SEED-Net Graduate Degree Program provides opportunity for young professionals and faculty members of Member Institutions to pursue graduate degrees in 10 engineering fields. The Program aims to enhance capacity development in science and technology across the ASEAN region by mobilizing human resources in the region and Japan. AUN/SEED-Net offers scholarships and research grants, targeting young and prospective faculty members to continue their career as teaching staff. Scholarships provided under Graduate Degree Program consist of;
1. Master’s Degree Program (Master’s)
A two-year Master’s Degree Program targets young professionals who wish to further their graduate study and become faculty members at Member Institutions. Successful candidates receive full scholarship while studying at Host Institutions in ASEAN. Master’s students are also entitled to the maximum of 4,000 USD of research grant under the Collaborative Research (CR)
2. Doctoral Degree Sandwich Program (PhD Sandwich)
With full scholarship, successful applicants of PhD Sandwich Program are trained at Host Institutions in ASEAN and conduct their research work at Japanese Supporting Universities under the supervision of Japanese co-advisors for the maximum of eight months. PhD Sandwich students also receive a research grant of 9,000 USD throughout the three-year program.
3. Doctoral Degree Program in Japan (PhD Japan)
This program aims to provide young professional and faculty members with high potentials the opportunity to pursue a Doctoral Degree at one of the Japanese Supporting Universities. AUN/SEED-Net provides full scholarships that cover tuition fee, living allowance and other benefits for successful applicants who are accepted to the PhD program offered at Japanese Supporting Universities.
4. Doctoral Degree Program in Singapore (PhD Singapore)
AUN/SEED-Net offers scholarships for successful applicants who are admitted to the Doctoral Degree program at National University of Singapore (NUS) or Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Priority is given to young faculty members who intend to pursue the professorship at Member Institutions after graduation. Scholarship duration is four years.
5. Integrated Graduate Degree Program (Integrated PhD)
Introduced in 2013, a four-year Integrated PhD Program is designed to provide a fast track for applicants with distinguished academic record in their undergraduate level to pursue a Doctoral Degree at Host Institutions in ASEAN. The program, combining Master’s and Doctoral Degree, is offered at specific Host Institutions. In addition, students also work with their Japanese co-advisors at Japanese Supporting Universities for 10 months to improve their research quality.AUN/SEED-Net conducts an Open House session at Member Institutions in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam to promote program activities and supports every year. Furthermore, orientation is given at Host Institutions for AUN/SEED-Net students and faculty members who are interested in participating in AUN/SEED-Net’s activities.
Research Program
1. Collaborative Research Program for ongoing AUN/SEED-Net Students (CR)
Collaborative Research Program (CR) enriches research collaboration between Member Institutions and Japanese Supporting Universities under a joint supervision of AUN/SEED-Net’s students. The program helps to ensure student’s high quality thesis research and successful timely degree completion. AUN/SEED-Net’s students can utilize CR funds for research expenses such as buying research equipment and reference books as well as to present their papers in international conferences.
2. Collaborative Research Program for Alumni (CRA)
The program is for young academic staff who have obtained a doctoral degree under the supervision of Japanese professors through any AUN/SEED-Net programs. The alumni receive support to work on research at their institutions supervised by their former Japanese advisors or co-advisors.
3. Collaborative Research Program for Common Regional Issues (CRC)
Collaborative Research Program for Common Regional Issues supports academic staff of Member Institutions in conducting multinational collaborative researches on Common Regional Issues facilitated by Japanese professors. The involvements of national administrative organizations or research institutes are recommended for more contribution to practical activities.
4. Collaborative Research Program with Industry (CRI)
Collaborative Research Program with Industry aims to contribute to industrial development through innovation and application of high technology. This program supports academic staff of Member institutions to conduct collaborative researches with industry under the guidance of Japanese professors. Counter-budget from industry is also contributed.
Mobility and Networking
1. Regional Conference (RC)
Regional conferences are annually organized by field around the ASEAN region with the purpose to present research outputs of the AUN/SEED-Net network, to exchange information on research and technology trends, and to pursue discussions on future collaborative research topics.
2. Research Fellowship Program (RF)
The Research Fellowship Program in ASEAN or in Japan supports young academic staff who have obtained a doctoral degree through any AUN/SEED-Net programs to continue their research work at Host Institutions in ASEAN or supporting universities in Japan for a maximum of 6 months.
3. Japanese Professor Dispatch Program (JPDP)
This program supports Japanese professors to visit Member Institutions in ASEAN in order to discharge joint research supervision of AUN/SEED-Net students, discuss research collaboration with faculty staff, or participate in AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conferences.
4. Short-term Research Program in Japan (SRJP)
The program provides significant support to academic staff of Member Institutions to visit Japanese supporting universities for academic activities or network strengthening for a maximum of 30 days.
5. Short-term Visit Program in ASEAN (SVAS)
Academic staff of member institutions can utilize this program to travel for 30 days maximum to other Member Institutions in the ASEAN region for research work, technical assistance, network strengthening, or meeting on field-wise activities with persons concerned.
6. ASEAN Engineering Journal (AEJ)
As a fruit of the network collaboration, the “ASEAN Engineering Journal” has been launched to be a platform for engineering scholars and researchers to publish knowledge from academic research outcomes in ASEAN countries, to improve research quality through review process, and to strengthen academic society and network.
University-Industry Linkage
1. University – Industry Linkage Promotion Training (U-I Training)
University – Industry Linkage Promotion Training provides faculty staff from Member Institutions with a short training in Japan on how to make a linkage with industry through research. After training, Japanese experts are dispatched to monitor and give advice to former participants of the course as well as other faculty staff.
2. Intensive Course on Management of Technology (MOT)
